Chin and Neck Fat Are a Concern for Many
A double chin is not something anybody wants, but some people have them, even if they have a healthy lifestyle. Double chins cause people to look older and heavier than they actually are. But there’s some good news: The FDA has approved the first drug that can get rid of stubborn neck fat, without surgery. It is called Kybella and is a deoxycholic acid that is made by Kythera Biopharmaceuticals in California. This is the same acid that the body makes to help it absorb fat. Even better — it just takes minutes for a medical professional to inject this into the impacted fat tissue.
Kybella immediately works on a double chin and destroys the cell membrane of submental fat, triggering it to burst and disappear permanently. This is truly a problem area for many and this is excellent news. Approximately 68 percent of those surveyed by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery in 2014 said that excess fat under the neck and chin were one of their primary concerns. Many people believe that having a double chin adds years to their face.
A number of injections are required during a treatment, but it only takes a few days to heal and no bandages are necessary. It may take a few sessions to eliminate all of the problem areas. Kybella received FDA approval after the manufacturer submitted 19 clinical studies that included about 2,600 patients. It was shown that the drug worked to eliminate moderate-to-severe chin fat.
The FDA warns that while this may be a successful treatment for your neck, do not expect it to dissolve fat in other problem spots.
“It is important to remember that Kybella is only approved for the treatment of fat occurring below the chin, and it is not known if Kybella is safe or effective for treatment outside of this area,” said Dr. Amy G. Egan, deputy director of the Office of Drug Evaluation III in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
